Lessons from Makar Sankranti on Living a Values-Driven Life

As we celebrate Makar Sankranti, a festival that marks the harvest season and the start of longer days, we’re reminded of the core values that help us navigate our journeys. Just like the manja (thread) that holds a kite steady as it soars high, our core values guide us, keeping us aligned and focused on our goals.

It’s easy to lose sight of what really matters. We often chase external success or achievements, but without a solid foundation in our values, we can lose direction.

The thread that holds the kite symbolizes the core values that keep us grounded while we reach for greater heights in life and work. Without it, we risk drifting aimlessly.

THREE THINGS TO LEARN:

1) CORE VALUES PROVIDE DIRECTION:

Just like the thread guides the kite’s flight, core values direct our actions, decisions, and relationships. When we stay true to our values, we find clarity and purpose.

2) VALUES KEEP US GROUNDED:

As kites can fly higher when the thread is strong and steady, our values help us stay balanced and aligned, even when challenges arise.

3) COMPROMISING VALUES LEADS TO INSTABILITY:

If we compromise our values, it’s like flying a kite without the manja. We may soar for a while, but eventually, without stability, we will fall. The thread ensures stability and focus—our values do the same in life.

LESSONS FROM INDIAN ANCIENT WISDOM

In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna teaches us the importance of Karma Yoga—acting with intention and staying true to our dharma (duty) without being swayed by results.

This teaching aligns with the concept of core values: when we act in accordance with our values, we create a steady path, much like the kite that stays on course thanks to its thread. Without this alignment, we can easily drift off course, losing sight of what truly matters.

FINAL THOUGHTS

By staying true to our core values—whether personal or cultural—we find the strength to navigate the challenges ahead and to build a life of growth and fulfillment, much like the steady flight of a kite held by a strong thread.
